Week 6 Review: Teacher Geek a blog by
Rachel Jones
This week I reviewed a blog that was voted the Top Educational Blog by UK Ed Chat in 2015. Teacher Geek is written by teacher and e-learning coordinator, Rachel Jones. In scanning her posts, she seems to have a passion for empowering students, whether that is through helping them make good choices on social media or finding ways to help them make connections across curriculum. She says that being a teacher geek is "all about: making the most of the resources you have at your disposal, and shaking up your thinking about what will inspire, engage and motivate learners. A teacher geek will look to exploit all potential learning opportunities, and be comfortable with taking risks by working with resources from outside their subject area."

One post that I found especially interesting is titled How to help parents to support their child's learning. Using the Typorama app, Rachel has created a series of concise, visually appealing graphics to remind parents and students of helpful tips that are especially applicable around exam/revision time. Some of my favorites include:
I think that these would be great to have posted in a classroom for students to see, but these images would also be good to include in a class newsletter or other communication with parents. Teacher Geek thinks outside of the normal classroom confines and challenges other teacher to do the same. What will you do to be a Teacher Geek?
Ideal teachers are those who use themselves as a bridge over which they invite their students to cross, then having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create bridges of their own." |
